2006/11/02

On November 2, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) met respectively with President Joao Bernardo Vieira of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia at the Great Hall of the People.

During his meeting with Vieira, Wu said that the ties between China and Guinea-Bissau have been growing smoothly with increased mutual political trust and broader cooperation. Wu appreciated Guinea-Bissau's governhment and parliament for adhering to the one-China policy. Wu said the NPC would like to further enhance friendly cooperation with the parliament of Guinea-Bissau to boost mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, promote friendly cooperation in all areas and contribute to bilateral ties.

Echoing Wu's comments on bilateral ties, Vieira reiterated that Guinea-Bissau will "stick to the one-China policy firmly" and regard China as a "real friend". He said his country is ready to conduct all-round cooperation with China based on mutual benefits to promote common development.

Meeting with Johnson-Sirleaf, Wu said that although both sides resumed their diplomatic ties not long ago, the relations have grown rapidly and cooperation in all areas has got off to a good start. "China appreciates the Liberian government and parliament for their adherence to the one-China policy and support for China's reunification cause," Wu said. Wu said that as the two countries are complementary in economy, there is huge potential for their mutually beneficial cooperation. China would like to work with Liberia to explore new ways and methods to materialize the consensus reached by leaders of both countries for the benefit of both peoples, he said. Wu said the NPC attaches importance to developing friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Liberian parliament so as to jointly push forward the friendly cooperation.

Johnson-Sirleaf said it is an "unswerving policy" of Liberia to consolidate and advance ties with China. She said that the achievements of China's economic reform are very impressive, adding that Liberia hopes to learn from China's experience and strengthen cooperation in agriculture, fishery, infrastructure construction and mineral resources exploitation to inject new vitality into bilateral ties.

Both sides spoke highly of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and believed the upcoming Beijing Summit will surely achieve a great success and usher in a new stage for China-Africa friendly cooperation.
