Hu Jintao Arrives in Dakar for State Visit to Senegal

2009/02/17

On February 13, 2009, visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Dakar, kicking off his state visit to Senegal, the third leg of his "journey of friendship and cooperation".

At 14:00 local time, President Hu’s special plane arrived at Léopold Sédar Senghor international airport in Dakar. He was warmly greeted by his Senegalese counterpart Abdoulaye Wade at a welcoming ceremony at the airport.

In a statement issued upon arrival, Hu pointed out that Senegal is an important country in West Africa. Over the years, the Senegalese government and people have remained committed to maintaining national stability, promoting economic growth and improving people’s livelihood and have made positive contributions to Africa’s peace and development.

Both countries enjoy good friendship and the resumption of diplomatic ties helped the development of bilateral cooperation in politics, trade, culture, education and public health among others, said Hu. Both sides have conducted close coordination and cooperation in international affairs and their friendship has brought tangible benefits to both peoples, he added.

Hu said he looked forward to exchanging in-depth views with Wade on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern. He expressed belief that the current visit will deepen mutual understanding and trust, promote cooperation in various fields and move bilateral relations to a new high.

Hu’s entourage including Ling Jihua, Wang Huning and Dai Bingguo arrived by the same plane.

Chinese Ambassador to Senegal Lu Shaye, the embassy staff and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions also welcomed Hu and his delegation at the airport.

President Hu flew into Dakar from the Malian capital of Bamako after concluding his state visit to Mali. Upon his departure from Bamako, President Hu attended a grand farewell ceremony held by Malian President Amadou Toumany Toure at the airport.

Senegal is the third leg of President Hu’s five-nation tour. Earlier, Hu had visited Saudi Arabia and Mali. The week-long tour will also take him to Tanzania and Mauritius.
