On September 8, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and visiting African Union (AU) Commission Chairman Jean Ping co-chaired the second China-AU Strategic Dialogue in Beijing. During their meeting, Yang said China and the AU have maintained long-term friendship and their ties have been developing rapidly in recent years. China has always attached importance to the status and role of the AU and has provided assistance to the AU in its capacity building and peacekeeping operations in related African countries. China appreciated AU's firm support to China in the issues concerning China's core and major interests. China's relationship with the AU is an important part of the new-type China-Africa strategic partnership. China is willing to work with the AU to promote the continuous development of their cooperation in all areas, Yang said.
Jean Ping said the Chinese government and people have long been supporting the efforts of African countries to safeguard peace and stability and have offered enormous disinterested assistance to their economic construction, for which the African side expressed deep appreciation. The AU will continue to adhere to the one-China policy, enhance consultation and cooperation with China in international affairs and make positive contributions to the development of China-Africa relations. Both sides also exchanged views on the African situation, as well as international and regional issues of common concern.
