Li Zhaoxing Continues Bilateral and Multilateral Diplomatic Activities in New York

On September 27, 2004 (local time), Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Foreign Minister of Bhutan Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller, Foreign Minister of Chile Maria Soledad Alvear, Foreign Minister of Cambodia Hor Namhong, Foreign Minister of Turkey Abdullah Gul and Foreign Minister of Tunisia Habib Ben Yahia at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) and attended the breakfast meeting of foreign ministers of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and the political dialogue between China and the foreign ministers of the Rio Group. Li exchanged views with his counterparts on such regional and international issues as bilateral ties, reform of the UN and the international financial regime, Asia regional cooperation, eradication of poverty and fight against terrorism. When talking about the China-Bhutan and China-Cambodia relations, Li Zhaoxing said that China adheres to the policy of good-neighborliness and friendship. As a good neighbor and partner of its neighboring countries, China stands ready to develop friendly cooperative relations with the two countries and strengthen regional cooperation. When meeting with the foreign minister of Chile, Li pointed out that China and Chile share mutual political trust, are economically complementary and enjoy great cooperation potentials. He expressed the hope that the two countries should make concerted efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields. Alvear said that Chile attaches great importance to its relations with China, resolutely follows the one-China policy and will properly handle issues related with Taiwan during the APEC meeting. Concerning China's relationship with the Rio Group, Li believed that the bilateral cooperation in each and every field has made tangible achievements and is becoming the showcase of South-South cooperation. China is ready, in the spirit of being equal and pragmatic, to enrich bilateral cooperation, making it an effective channel of bilateral cooperation. Li highly complimented the active role of the foreign minister dialogue mechanism between China and the Rio Group in strengthening mutual understanding and expanding political trust over 14 years since its establishment. The foreign ministers of the 19 member states of Rio Group agreed unanimously to enhance friendly ties with China, strengthen cooperation in the multilateral area, and contribute to South-South cooperation. Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and his Denmark counterpart further exchanged views on strengthening the role of the UN and promoting the development of relations between China and the EU.
