China and Germany Consult on Anti-terrorism in Beijing

On September 24, 2003, Sino-German consultations on anti-terrorism were held in Beijing. The delegations were composed of representatives from the foreign ministries and other relevant departments of the two countries. The Chinese delegation was led by Councilor Chen Weixiong of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whereas the German delegation was led by Ambassador Dr. GeorgWitschel,Federal Government Commissionerfor Combating International Terrorism. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional anti-terrorism situation, the UN's role in international fight against terrorism and Sino-German anti-terrorism cooperation. The two sides agreed that international anti-terrorism cooperation should be conducted in accordance with the UN Charter and other principles ofinternational law, the role of the UN and the Security Council should be given full play to, and measures should be taken to tackle both the symptoms and root-causes of international terrorism. The Chinese side gave a comprehensive introduction to China's stance on the anti-terrorism issue. The German side reiterated its understanding and support to the Chinese government's efforts to crack down on East Turkistan terrorist forces. Both sides agreed that the consultations had been fruitful and helped to expand cooperation areas and deepen bilateral understanding and coordination on anti-terrorism, and would vigorously propel the development of bilateral relations.
