
On May 25, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Myanmar Prime Minister General Thein Sein and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon separately in Yangon, Myanmar.
Meeting with Thein Sein, Yang extended again China's mourning and consolation over Myanmar's cyclone tragic loss on behalf of the Chinese government, appreciating Myanmar people's strong determination in overcoming the difficulties.
Yang said China and Myanmar, as friendly neighbors linked by rivers and mountains, enjoy "blood brother" friendship and the Chinese people feel strongly the pain of the Myanmar people. After Myanmar's cyclone disaster, President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao sent messages of condolences to Chairman of Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Than Shwe and Prime Minister Thein Sein respectively. The Chinese government also offered emergency aid in various forms to Myanmar. Under the leadership of the Chinese government, the whole nation are now going all out for quake relief after a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan, China on May 12. "At this particular time, we gain a deeper understanding of the pain being suffered by the affected people in Myanmar," Yang said.
Yang expressed China's support of the ASEAN in its leading role in relief and reconstruction work of Myanmar, hoping Myanmar could coordinate well with the regional grouping. Yang said he believed that under the leadership of the Myanmar government and with the support of friendly neighbors as well as the international community, the industrious and brave Myanmar people are bound to overcome the hardship and rebuild their homeland.

At the meeting, Thein Sein said Myanmar and China are close neighbors sharing "blood brother" friendship and have shown understanding and support for each other. after Myanmar's cyclone disaster, China offered aid to the affected areas in a timely manner. China also overcame difficulties and sent a medical team to Myanmar at a time when China itself was even hit by a severe earthquake. This acts reflected China's deep friendship with Myanmar, he said, adding they also helped to consolidate the friendship between the two peoples. He expressed thanks to China for its selfless assistance to his country. Thein Sein, on behalf of the Myanmar government and people, once again expressed profound condolences over the Wenchuan earthquake.
In meeting with UN chief Ban Ki-moon, Chinese foreign minister Yang thanked Ban for UN's sympathy and support to China over the Sichuan earthquake, saying that China will maintain contact with the UN in post-disaster reconstruction. Yang spoke highly of the United Nations and Ban for their endeavors in dealing with Myanmar's cyclone relief efforts. He said after Myanmar's cyclone disaster, the UN played a sound role in coordinating international aid. China supports ASEAN and UN in playing the leading role in international relief aid measures which benefit victims in their rehabilitation, he said.
On the occasion, Ban appraised China over its active participation in the international community's relief aid action on Myanmar, saying that China's extending of its helping hand to other country even when itself was meeting with massive disaster demonstrated the spirit of China's humanitarianism. Ban also spoke highly of Chinese government and people's strong spirit of solidarity and coordination in face of earthquake, pledging that the UN will continue to offer assistance with utmost efforts.
On the same day, Yang also met with German Minister of State Erler.
Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Guan Mu and Assistant Minister of Commerce Chong Quan attended the above-mentioned meetings.
