On October 15, 2002, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Qian said that in the past half century, the UN has made great efforts in maintaining world peace and promoting common development, with remarkable achievements and praise from all parties. The UN, as the most representative inter-governmental international organization, will continue to play an important role in the new century. This is the common wish of the international community and conforms to the fundamental interests of all the countries and peoples in the world. Qian emphasized that China attaches great importance to and support strengthening the role of the UN in international affairs, and will continue to actively participate in UN activities in all fields and constantly expand friendly relations and cooperation with the UN. Annan thanked the Chinese government for its support for the UN and himself. He spoke highly of China's role in international affairs and said that the UN would like to further strengthen cooperation with China in all fields. Qian said that the Taiwan authorities has recently dished out the so-called Taiwan Independence theories, and try to create "Two Chinas" or "One China, One Taiwan" internationally. This is firmly opposed by all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, and will not succeed. Not long ago, the General Affairs Committee of the 57th Session of the UN General Assembly again resolutely rejected the inclusion of the so-called question of Taiwan's "participation" in the UN in the agenda of the current session, which fully shows that the Chinese government's position on the Taiwan question is widely understood and supported by the international community. Annan reaffirmed the One China principle. The two sides also exchanged views on the fight against terrorism, Iraqi, the prevention and treatment of AIDS and other issues.
