Introduction of the South Center

Growing out of the South Commission( established in 1987), the South Center was founded in 1990 for the purpose of promoting South solidarity and various types of South-South cooperation, and enhancing the mutual understanding and dialogue between the South and the North on the basis of equity and justice. Its headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland. The Center consists of the Council of Representatives, the Board and the Secretariat.

China's relations with the South Center

China participated formally in the South Center on 4 May 1995. China's representative to the Center is held concurrently by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other International Organizations. Mr. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, late Chairman of the South Center, visited China in April 1987 and November 1989 respectively in the capacity of the Chairman of the South Commission and was received by Mr. Deng Xiaoping and the other Communist Party and state leaders. In July 1991, September 1992 and September 1993, Mr. Nyerere visited China in the capacity of the Chairman of the South Center, and was received by Mr. Jiang Zemin, Secretary-general of the Chinese Communist Party. China contributed USD500,000 to the Center in 1996.
