China's Defense Expenditure

2002/11/05

China's defense spending is at a low level in the world either in absolute terms or in terms of per capita and per military personnel spending, its proportion in GDP or in state budget.

With national economic development, especially the improvement of the living standard of the Chinese people, it is natural for China to properly increase the defense expenditure so as to guarantee the living standard of its officers and soldiers and the need of the military modernization drive. Although China has a large population, long land border and coastline, the base of China's defense spending has been very low over many years.

China is a developing country with economic construction as its central task, which needs a long-term peaceful international environment. As a staunch force for maintaining global and regional peace and stability, China's development will not pose threat to any country.
