China and Poland Consult on International Security and Arms Control

On September 16, 2003, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Marek Siwiec, head of the National Security Bureau of Poland at the Foreign Ministry. Li said China attaches great importance to its relations with Poland and is fully committed to consistently promoting the bilateral friendly and cooperative ties. Hestressed the importance of maintaining the current international system of arms control and continuing to push forward the process of multilateral arms control, disarmament and anti-proliferation, adding that cooperation is all the more needed under the new situation. He went on to say that China stands ready to step up cooperation and exchanges with Poland in international security and arms control. Siwiec said China is playing a crucial role in international affairs, noting that the in-depth exchanges of views between the two countries have deepened Poland's understanding of China's positions and consolidated the foundation for the bilateral cooperation. On the same day, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui held talks with Siwiec on issues of international security and arms control. They exchanged views on the global security, situation of arms control, anti-proliferation, Middle East issue, Iraq situation and nuclear issue on Korean Peninsula and both agreed that the consultations have helped enhance mutual understanding and improve mutual trust.
