Statement by the Chinese Delegation on the Nuclear Issue on the Korean Peninsular at the Board of Govenor Meeting

2011/06/08

Mr. Chairman,

Due to various complicated factors, the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsular is at a standstill and the six-party talks has been suspended for over two years. This situation is not in the interest of any parties. China has been working actively to facilitate peace and negotiations and to promote the resumption of the six-party talks.

China is always of the view that the Korean Peninsular should be denuclearized in a peaceful manner through dialogues and consultations and that the six-party talks is an effective platform for maintaining regional peace and stability and to achieve denuclearization of the Peninsular.

Thanks to the joint efforts by all parties, the tension on the Peninsular has been eased to some extent and the parties concerned have started engagement and dialogue, though the momentum of dialogue remains fragile and there still exist factors of unstability. China hopes that the ROK and the DPRK conduct dialogues at an early date and that the US and the DPRK engage at an appropriate time. On that basis the six-party talks could be resumed as soon as possible and in the process of the six-party talks a solution could be sought by which the 19 September Joint Statement would be comprehensively implemented and the concerns of all parties could be addressed in a balanced manner.

China is ready, along with the relevant parties and the international community, to play a constructive role in the denuclearization on the Korean Peninsular and the long-term peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
