Destruction of Chemical Weapons Abandoned by Japan

2008/02/29

During its war against China, the Japanese invaders abandoned large quantities of chemical weapons on the Chinese territory. To date, the Chemical Weapons Abandoned by Japan (hereinafter "the ACW") still pose great threat to the lives and property of the Chinese people and to the ecological environment of China.

The Government and the people of China attach great importance to the issue of ACW in China and hold that the ACW should be destroyed completely and thoroughly as soon as possible in accordance with the provisions of the CWC and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of Japan on the Destruction of the ACW in China. Japan, the Abandoning State Party, shall provide all necessary financial, technical, expert, facility as well as other resources for the purpose of destroying the ACW.

In recent years, through the joint efforts by both China and Japan, the work on the disposal of the ACW made some progress. Up till now the two sides have conducted more than 80 bilateral investigations and excavation operations with more than 40,000 ACW recovered. However, the substantive destruction is yet to begin. China urges Japan to enhance its efforts to start up the destruction at the earliest date possible and to complete the destruction of the ACW within the time-limit set forth by the CWC. China, as the Territorial State Party, will continue to provide, the necessary assistance in accordance with the provisions of the CWC.
