Wen Jiabao Meets with Brazilian President Lula

2009/05/19

On May 19, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said Brazil is the first developing country to establish strategic partnership with China, as well as China's biggest trading partner in Latin America. He noted the two countries had carried out fruitful cooperation in technological, energy and financial areas. Wen called for closer bilateral coordination to implement various agreements signed between both countries and nail down the joint action plan, in a bid to cement all-round, multi-level and broad cooperation.

With the major challenges of the global slump, climate change, energy and food security looming, Wen called on the developing world to expand international cooperation and safeguard interests of themselves, while urging developed countries to shoulder greater responsibilities to open their markets and increase aid and technology transfer to the developing nations. China is ready to work with Brazil to push for concerted efforts of the international community in tackling the current difficulties and promoting harmonious and sustainable development of the world.

Lula agreed with Wen's proposals on the development of bilateral ties, saying that the bilateral strategic partnership is being consolidated and developed. The substantial increase of trade volume indicates that bilateral ties are in a right direction. Lula said he believed the financial crisis had offered cooperation opportunities for both nations, calling for closer cooperation in political, economic, technological and aviation areas and more personnel exchanges. Both sides should also step up efforts in formulating their joint action plan through bilateral high-level coordination and cooperation committee and push forward bilateral ties.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other officials attended the meeting.
