Hu Jintao Meets with Chilean President Bachelet

On November 17, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hu spoke highly of the sound development of Sino-Chilean relations. He said both sides have shown mutual political trust, made obvious progress in economic and trade cooperation and maintained sound coordination in international and regional affairs with the trade volume growing rapidly. He believed with the implementation of the China-Chile free trade agreement, the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries would enjoy greater potential. China is ready to work with Chile to ensure an early conclusion of their negotiations on service trade and investment so as to inject new energy into bilateral trade ties, said Hu. Hu said China deems Chile a good friend and partner and attaches great importance to friendly cooperation with Chile. The Chinese side will make concerted efforts with the Chilean side to push the comprehensive cooperative partnership to a new level, Hu added. Bachelet said the two countries have maintained sound cooperative ties and bilateral cooperation is progressing along a path defined by both sides. Both sides have taken a series of concrete actions to promote economic and trade relations, bringing important interest to both sides, She said. She is convinced that the service trade and investment arrangements for a second phase of their Free Trade Agreement will be mutually beneficial. She said the two countries share many identical or similar views on major international and regional issues, adding Chile supports China's important role in world peace, stability and development, and appreciates China's cooperation with Africa and its efforts for the peaceful solution to the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula. She said Chile, as a good friend and partner, would help the development of relations between China and other Latin American countries. Wang Gang, Alternate Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and other accompanying officials attended the meeting.
