Zeng Qinghong Meets with Governor General of Saint Lucia

On September 6, 2004, Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong met with Governor General Dr. Perlette Louisy of Saint Lucia at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides held amiable and friendly talks.

Zeng Qinghong made positive remarks on development of relations between the two countries. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1997, relations between China and Saint Lucia have been developing rapidly with good cooperation conducted in both bilateral and multilateral areas. The top-level exchanges enhanced the mutual understanding, trust and friendship between the two sides. China provided assistance to Saint Lucia within its available resources, which has played a positive role in the economic and social development of Saint Lucia. The two countries also carried out active exchanges and cooperation in the fields of journalism, culture and education. In international affairs, China and Saint Lucia have supported and coordinated with each other closely.

Zeng Qinghong expressed appreciation for the adherence to the one-China policy by Saint Lucia. He indicated that China values the cooperation between the two governments and the friendship between the two peoples of China and Saint Lucia. He also expressed the hope that the two sides will maintain the top-level exchanges, expand exchanges between the governments, legislative bodies and parties of the two countries, constantly enhance the economic and trade cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit and achieving a win-win situation, maintain the good momentum for cooperation in the fields of culture, education and journalism and strengthen cooperation in tourism, while extending an invitation to Saint Lucia to attend the Ministerial-level Meeting of the First China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum slated in early next year.

Louisy agreed to Zeng's comments on relations between the two countries and his proposal on priority areas of cooperation. She said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 7 years ago, the two countries have built up close and friendly relations on the principles of peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that the one-China policy is an important pillar of Saint Lucia's policies towards China and Saint Lucia will continue adhering to the policy. She added that the government and people of Saint Lucia will treasure up the precious assistance rendered by China in the memory and are looking forward to continuing the mutually beneficial, reciprocal and fruitful cooperation with China.

Following the talks, Vice President Zeng Qinghong and Governor General Dr. Perlette Louisy attended the signing ceremony for the economic and technological cooperation agreement between the government of China and the government of Saint Lucia.
