China and Suriname

Friendly relations and cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Suriname grew steadily in 2010. The two sides maintained sound momentum of exchanges and cooperation in the political, economic, trade, military, cultural, educational and other fields.

Bilateral exchanges at various levels were close. In August, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Vice President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi sent messages of congratulations to the newly-elected President of Suriname Desi Bouterse, Vice President Robert Ameerali and Foreign Minister Winston Lackin respectively. In September, a working group from the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the MFA visited Suriname and met with Foreign Minister Lackin. In November, Minister of Defence of Suriname Lamure Latour visited China. In December, a delegation of Suriname's ruling National Democratic Party visited China.

Cooperation in economy and trade was fruitful. China actively conducted economic and technological cooperation with Suriname in infrastructure development, forestry and other fields. The low-income housing project was finished and handed over, and the 3rd Phase Road Rehabilitation and Construction Project made smooth headway. Bilateral trade grew steadily and China became the largest buyer of Surinam's timber.

Exchange and cooperation in the cultural and other fields maintained sound momentum. In April, a delegation of Suriname's Indians visited China. In November, the PLA Military Band visited Suriname and attended the celebrations for the 35th anniversary of Suriname's independence. The Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe performed in Suriname. The Zhejiang Normal University and the University of Suriname established a sister university relationship. Seven students from Suriname came to study in China.
