Wu Bangguo Meets with Venezuelan President Chavez

On August 25, 2006, Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with Venezuelan President Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias in the Great Hall of the People. Wu said China-Venezuela strategic partnership of common development has been developing continuously with the joint efforts of both sides in recent years. The mutual political trust between the two countries has been steadily deepened and economic and trade cooperation has been developing rapidly with positive achievements scored in cooperation in the areas of energy, agriculture and infrastructure. He said the Chinese side appreciates the Venezuelan side's support for China on such questions as Taiwan, Tibet and human rights. China will make concerted efforts with Venezuela to turn bilateral relations into a model for equality, reciprocity and sincere cooperation among developing countries, noted Wu. He said the friendly exchanges between the NPC of China and the Venezuelan National Congress are an important part of bilateral ties and will help promote bilateral cooperation in all areas. He hoped the two parliaments will maintain high-level contacts, expand exchanges and cooperation between different departments, learn from each other in building democracy and legal systems and governing, and strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional inter-parliament organizations in a bid to contribute to comprehensive development of bilateral relations. Wu also introduced China's economic and social developments. Chavez said his current visit has been successful and it will push forward bilateral relations. He said the Venezuelan side attaches great importance to bilateral relations and will make more efforts with the Chinese side to build on the achievements of this visit, strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two governments and parliaments, and continuously push forward bilateral reciprocal cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, energy, telecommunications, tourism and agriculture. The Venezuelan side will continue to abide by the one-China policy.
