Wen Jiabao Holds Talks with Dominican Prime Minister

2005/09/20

On September 20, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council held talks with visiting Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit in the Great Hall of the People and both sides reached consensus on strengthening bilateral friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation. Wen said that since the establishment of China-Dominica diplomatic ties last March, the bilateral relations have undergone a historic change and entered a new stage of sound and steady development. Over the short period of more than one year, both sides have actively committed to all-round development of bilateral relations and made obvious headway in mutual political trust and economic and trade cooperation. Facts have proven that the bilateral relations are based on equality and mutual benefits and conform to the fundamental interest of both sides and their people. Both sides should cherish this hard-won situation and make joint efforts to consolidate and develop the friendly cooperative relations. To this end, both sides should look at the bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, build up mutual political trust, advance the economic and trade cooperation, expand exchanges in the areas of culture, education and health and keep closer coordination and collaboration in international affairs.

Skerrit indicated that since both sides established their diplomatic ties, the bilateral relations have developed rapidly. Though Dominica is a small country, it wins support from China and the bilateral relations are progressing based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference into each other's international affairs. China's assistance has promoted Dominica's economic growth and improved its people' livelihood and Dominica deems China a sincere friend and partner. The Dominican government resolutely pursues the one-China policy, supports China's active role in international affairs and hopes that both sides will strengthen cooperation in the areas of tourism, housing, investment, education, health and disaster relief.

Following the talks, Wen and Skerrit jointly attended the signing ceremony of the agreement on economic and technological cooperation and the document on the cooperation in the areas of education, human resources and tourism between both sides.

Prior to the talks, Wen held a welcome ceremony for Skerrit. Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-government League Liu Yiming, Education Minister Zhou Ji, Chinese Ambassador to Dominica Ye Dabo and other officials attended the ceremony.
