2005/05/10

On May 9, 2005, Chairman Jia Qinglin of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Chief Executive Gonzalez of Quintana Roo State of Mexico in Cancun.

Jia Qinglin said that since China and Mexico established the strategic partnership in December 2003, the friendly exchange and cooperation between the two countries in various fields has been deepening and yielded fruitful results. The exchange between civilians and regions of the two countries is increasing. The Chinese government and people attach importance to developing the traditional friendship with the Mexican government and people. The CPPCC prioritizes the development of friendly exchange with all Mexican sectors. Quintana Roo State has achieved remarkable results in building a secure and environment-friendly society. We hope that Quintana Roo State and Mexico could make greater achievements in economic construction and social development and that Quintana Roo State and the Cancun city could exchange experiences and carry out cooperation with related Chinese provinces and cities in such fields as urban development and tourism.

On behalf of the people in Quintana Roo State and Cancun, Gonzalez extended a warm welcome to Chairman Jia for his visit. He said that the tourism industry of Quintana Roo State is well developed. Cancun was a small fishing village more than 30 years ago. Today it has turned into an important tourist city in the Caribbean and Latin American region. The Chinese economy has developed rapidly and accumulated many successful experiences. There are many things that Mexico and China could learn from each other. Quintana Roo State is willing to actively develop cooperation with China in such fields as tourism and also hopes that the Chinese side could provide support to the tourism sector of Quintana Roo State.

At the invitation of Speaker Fernandez of Mexican Senate, Jia Qinglin arrived in Cancun for an official and friendly visit to Mexico on the same day. Jia Qinglin delivered a brief speech at the Cancun airport. He said that the relations between China and Latin American countries including Mexico have entered a new development period in recent years. His tour to Latin America this time is to further exchange, promote understanding, deepen friendship and advance cooperation.
