China and Cyprus

The year 2010 witnessed sound and steady development of relations, increasing political mutual trust, closer people-to-people exchanges and positive progress in cooperation across the board between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Cyprus.

People-to-people exchanges at various levels were close. From 8 to 10 June, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and CPPCC Vice Chairman Wang Gang visited Cyprus and met President Demetris Christofias and other political leaders of Cyprus. They exchanged views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of shared interest and reached broad consensus. Other Chinese leaders who visited Cyprus included Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee Zhang Gaoli, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Director of the Party History Research Office of the CPC Central Committee Ouyang Song and Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan. Leaders from Cyprus who visited China included Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nicholas Emiliou.

Economic cooperation and trade continued to grow. The commerce departments of the two sides maintained sound communication and coordination. During Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan's visit to Cyprus, the two sides discussed how to develop bilateral relations and expand two-way trade and investment. In June, the sixth meeting of the China-Cyprus Joint Commission on Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation was held in Beijing, during which the two sides signed a document on deepening cooperation in commerce, industry, tourism and other fields.

Health, cultural and military exchanges continued to deepen. The two sides signed the Plan of Cooperation in the Field of Health and Medical Sciences Between the Ministry of Health of Cyprus and the Ministry of Health of China for 2010-2015. In May, Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Ma Biao led a delegation of the Guangxi government to Cyprus and exchanged views on cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Cyprus and the Thalassaemia International Federation and signed a cooperation agreement. In July, the Nanchang Song and Dance Troupe from Jiangxi province staged a special dance and music performance in Cyprus for an audience of over 600 people from various sectors of Cyprus. In June, a PLA foreign affairs delegation visited Cyprus and exchanged views with the Cyprus side on enhancing military exchanges and cooperation.
