Bilateral Relations

I. Retrospect of Political Relations

From May the 16th to the 23rd of 1999, at the invitation of the Institute of Foreign Affairs, the Legal Adviser to Izetbegovic, Member of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, visited China.

On September the 22nd of 1999, Mr. Wen Xi-Gui, Chinese Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, Bosnia and Herzegovina, signed the exchange document concerning Chinese free grant worth ¥3 million RMB for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

2000

August 29-31, Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Guchang visited Bosnia-Herzegovina for consultation between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries. During the visit, the two sides signed a protocol on the consultation.

September 8-15, Admir Jerkovic, special envoy of Alija Izetbegovic, president of the Presidium of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, visited China.

2002

From June 24 to 27, 2002, Zlatko Lagumdzija, Foreign Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina, visited China. Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with him. Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan held talks with him. During the visit, the two sides signed the Agreement on Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Implementation Plan for 2002-2004 Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Agreement on Facilitating and Protecting Investment between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. On July 8, Borislav Maric, the new ambassador of Bosnia-Herzegovina to China, presented his credentials to Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

II. Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations and Economic and Technological Cooperation

According to statistics released by the General Administration of Customs of China, the trade volume between China and Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2002 totaled US$3.47 million, up 56.4 percent from the previous year. Of the total value, China's export was US$3.09 million, up 99.9 percent from the previous year, and import US$0.38 million, down 43.1 percent.

III. Bilateral Exchanges and Cooperation in other fields

From January 23 to 24, 2003, Deputy Head of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee Cai Wu, as a guest of the Chinese embassy to Bosnia-Herzegovina, headed a delegation to visit the country. During the visit, Cai met and held talks respectively with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Bosnian Parliament Martin Raguz, President of the Srpska Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina Dragan Covic, Speaker Dragan Kainic, Chairman of Serbia Social Party Petar Djokic, Chairman of Independent Social Democrats Alliance Milorad Dodik, Chairman of New Croatia Advocacy Party Kresimir Zubak, Chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina Social Democratic Party Zlatko Lagumdzijia, Chairman of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Party Safet Halilovic, and Vice Chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina Democratic Action Party Elmir Jahic, Besides a visit to Sarajevo, the delegation also visited Banja Luka .

From April 25 to 28, 2003, at the invitation of the Croatian Democratic Community of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Chinese delegation led by Jiang Daming, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shangdong Province, visit Bosnia-Herzegovina to attend the eighth National Assembly of the party.

During the visit, Martin Raguz, Vice Chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina Croatian Democratic Community, and Deputy Speaker the House of Representatives of Bosnia-Herzegovina Parliament, and Elmir Jahic, Vice Chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina Democratic Action Party, respectively met with the delegation.
