China and Slovenia

The friendly and cooperative relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Slovenia continued to grow in 2010, and exchanges and cooperation in various fields made smooth progress.

The two countries maintained high-level contacts. President Hu Jintao had a brief conversation with President Danilo Turk while attending celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War in May. Prime Minister Borut Pahor paid a working visit to China in June and attended the National Pavilion Day activities of Slovenia at the Shanghai World Expo. He met with NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo and held talks with Premier Wen Jiabao. The leaders of the two countries agreed to expand bilateral exchanges and deepen business and cultural cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit to raise bilateral relationship to a new high.

Slovenia's new ambassador to China Marija Adanja presented her credentials to President Hu Jintao on 11 January. China's new ambassador to Slovenia Sun Rongmin presented his credentials to President Danilo Turk on 10 June. Slovenia's new consulate in Shanghai was officially opened in June.

The ministries of foreign affairs of the two countries enjoyed close cooperation. Dragoljuba Bencina, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, came to China in January for the political consultation between the two ministries.

Business and cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges made smooth progress. Dr. Patrick Vlacic, Minister of Transport, attended the seventh World Congress on High Speed Rail in China in December and signed with his Chinese counterpart, Minister Liu Zhijun of Railways, the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Area of Railways Between the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Slovenia. The ninth regular session of the Joint Commission on Economic and Commercial Cooperation between the two countries was held in Ljubljana in March. The Confucius Institute at the University of Ljubljana was officially launched in May. Slovenia and Croatia had a joint tourism promotion session in China in May. Mei Zhaorong, Executive Director of the China Foundation for International Studies, attended the fifth Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia in August.
