On May 22, 2009, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi held consultations with Gerard Araud, visiting Deputy Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry of France. Both sides had an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on such international and regional hot issues as non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, the reform of the UN, combating Somali pirates and Sudan's Darfur.
