Wen Jiabao Meets with British Foreign Secretary Miliband

2010/03/16

On March 16, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said that China attaches great importance to relations with Britain and agrees to lift the level of bilateral strategic dialogue. He hoped both sides will make use of this mechanism to build up mutual understanding and trust and work closely to push for long-term sound and stable development of China-Britain comprehensive strategic partnership. Wen emphasized that China was firmly committed to reciprocal opening-up, and imports and foreign investment were increasing. "We welcome British and other enterprises investing in China, and will offer favorable conditions for them," Wen said. China and Britain should enhance cooperation in green economy, environmental protection and climate change, said Wen, adding that both sides should also keep alert to trade protectionism and work together to oppose it.

Miliband said that Britain-China relations are very important. Britain is ready to seek consensus and deepen cooperation with China through bilateral strategic dialogue. He said Britain upholds free trade, and believes pressure should not be put on China regarding its currency. Britain attaches importance to the Chinese market and more and more British businesses are ready to expand investment in China.
