President Jiang Zemin Holds Talks with Visiting King Abdullah II of Jordan

2002/01/18

On January 17, 2002, President Jiang Zemin held talks with visiting King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan at the Great Hall of the People. Extending welcome to King Abdullah who is visiting China for the 5th time, Jiang spoke highly of the friendly cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, trade and other areas.

Jiang noted that the leaders of the two countries have reached extensive consensus about how to further develop their relations, adding that good momentum has presented itself in bilateral relations in recent years with the rapid growth of bilateral trade and increase of Chinese investment in Jordan. He said that economic cooperation between China and Jordan has been developing rapidly in a parallel way with their political ties increasingly being strengthened. He said that China adopts the strategy of "going out" and China's accession to the World Trade Organization will create new opportunities for economic cooperation and trade development between the two. He added that to develop long-term friendly Sino-Jordanian relations of mutually beneficial cooperation is a set policy of the Chinese government and bilateral relations will enjoy very bright prospects in the 21st century.

Relating to the Taiwan question, Jiang pointed out that the question of sovereignty and territorial integrity involves the national feelings of China's 1.3 billion people, including the Taiwan compatriots, adding that the ultimate reunification of the motherland is China's unshakable political goal. He also expressed appreciation to King Abdullah and the Jordanian government for their consistent stance of adhering to the One China principle.

Jiang also spoke highly of Jordan's domestic and foreign policies and briefed Abdullah on China's development.

Jiang also briefed his guests about China's views on the current international situation. As to the Middle East situation, he said that China is concerned about the escalation of conflicts between Israel and Palestine and the turbulent situation in this region in the past one year or so which pose great challenges to the Middle East peace process. He noted that China has been making positive efforts to ease the tension, adding that China maintains that the only correct solution for the Middle East issue lies in the early resumption of peace talks as violence and armed conflict can not solve problems and will only bring hatred and alienation. He urged the international community to make greater efforts in this regard, and pledged China will work with the international community, especially the Arab countries, towards the promotion of an early settlement of the Middle East issue.

On anti-terrorism, Jiang reiterated China's stance against all forms of terrorism, saying China advocates international cooperation against terrorism, especially the role played by the United Nations. He said that China also stresses no double standards should be used in the fight against terrorism, pointing out that China is against random expansion of anti-terrorism strikes.

Abdullah said that Jordan has had great respect for China and is committed to the development of bilateral ties, adding that his entourage includes many officials from the economic sector and business leaders and he expects to explore in greater depth the potential of economic cooperation with China and learn from China's success.

Abdullah said that Jordan and China have the same or similar views on the international affairs, adding that intensified exchanges between the two countries will help each other deal with challenges they are facing in their respective regions. He also briefed Jiang on Jordan's views and propositions on the current Middle East situation and international anti-terrorism. He noted that China, as an important member of the international community, should play an important role in issues relating to anti-terrorism and the Middle East situation.

After the talks, the two leaders presided over a ceremony for the signing of an agreement about China providing economic aid to Jordan.
