2004/07/06

On July 6, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council held talks with Prime Minister Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of the State of Kuwait in the Great Hall of the People. Both sides exchanged views on China-Kuwait relations as well as issues of common interest and reached broad consensus.

Premier Wen said that China-Kuwait relations enjoy a sound political foundation. Over many years, the two countries have understood and supported each other. Kuwait adheres to the one-China policy and has offered valuable political and economic support to China. The Chinese government has been resolutely supported Kuwait's righteous cause of safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and has committed itself to easing the tension in the Gulf region. In economic area, China and Kuwait have conducted effective cooperation in energy resources, chemical industry and labor service with bilateral trade volume increased year by year. He hopes that China and Kuwait will continue to keep closer their political exchanges, strengthen coordination in international affairs and expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation in the spirit of political mutual trust and treating each other as equals.

During the talks, Wen Jiabao reaffirmed that the Chinese government gives high priority to developing relations with Arab states. This January, when President Hu Jintao visited the headquarters of the League of Arab States, he and the Arab side declared the establishment of "the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum" and proposed four principles on the establishment of the new type of China-Arab states partnership. China would like to make full use of the forum, which is a new mechanism for enhancing collective dialogues and cooperation, and work along with Arab states including Kuwait to deepen friendly cooperation between the two sides in various fields and push forward further development of China-Arab states relations in the new situation.

Sabah said that Kuwait-China relations have been established on the basis of mutual understanding and mutual trust, with good momentum and bright prospects for development. The two countries have maintained very good political relations and the Kuwaiti government and people appreciated China's understanding and support for Kuwait's efforts to safeguard independence, severity and territorial integrity. Bilateral economic and trade relations are also quite satisfying with sound mutually beneficial cooperation in many projects including petroleum and port development.

Sabah stressed that Kuwait hopes to establish partnership with China and strengthen comprehensive cooperation between the two sides in political, economic and international affairs. Kuwait has always been supporting China's stance on the issue of Taiwan and this position will never change. Kuwait would like to make efforts to push for Arab states-China relations, especially the cooperation between the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) and China, and continuously deepen bilateral political, economic and trade relations.
