President Hu Jintao Meets with Prime Minister of Kuwait

On the afternoon of July 7, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Prime Minister Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of the State of Kuwait at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides held friendly talks with each other.

Hu Jintao said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, relations between China and Kuwait have survived the tests of changes in the international situation and witnessed smooth development throughout the years. Leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent exchanges of visits and contacts. The two sides have conducted effective exchanges and cooperation in many areas, such as economy, trade, energy resources, culture, health, and have supported and coordinated with each other on many important international as well as regional issues. The Chinese government firmly supports Kuwait in its efforts to safeguard its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity and is thankful to Kuwait for its understanding and support for China on issues related to Taiwan and human rights. Hu Jintao indicated that China-Kuwait relations have a good political basis and broad prospects for development. China stands ready to work together with Kuwait to further explore new areas and channels of mutually beneficial cooperation in the changed situations so as to push relations between the two countries towards more extensive and intensive development and bring benefits to both countries and peoples.

Sabah said that both Kuwait and China are earnest in developing the bilateral relations. The Kuwaiti government pursues the one-China policy, which stance will never change. Kuwait is thankful to the Chinese government and people for the precious support rendered to Kuwait during the process of its national recovery. He stressed that Kuwait is fully confident of the prospects for development of Kuwait-China relations and the purpose of the very visit is to enhance the pragmatic cooperation between the two sides at governmental, non-governmental and enterprise levels, expressing the hope that China could encourage Chinese businesses to participate in the economic projects of Kuwait and the region where Kuwait is in. Kuwait is willing to join forces of China to promote the comprehensive development of the political, economic and trade relations between the two countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and some other officials attended the meeting.
