Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Has a Phone Conversation with Libyan Foreign Minister Shalgam

2001/02/08

At the request of Abdul-Rahman Mahammad Shalgam, Secretary of the Foreign Communication and International Cooperation of the General People's Committee of Libya (Foreign Minister), Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan had a telephone conversation with him about the latest developments of the Lockerbie case. Shalgam briefed Tang on Libya's call for the complete lifting of the sanctions imposed upon the country following the verdict by a special Scottish court last month in the Netherlands over the Lockerbie case. Tang noted that Libya has suffered under the sanctions imposed after the Lockerbie incident that happened more than a decade ago, adding that these sanctions have caused great damage and misery to the Libyan people and the family members of the victims. The Chinese government has all along opposed the use of sanctions at will and calls for an early lifting of sanctions on Libya. China hopes that relevant parties will continue to negotiate for an appropriate settlement of the Lockerbie issue as early as possible. China will make unremitting efforts with other members of the international community for a complete lifting of sanctions on Libya.
