On January 15, 2006, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Liberian President-elect Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in Monrovia.

Li conveyed the oral message from President Hu Jintao to Sirleaf. In his oral message Hu congratulated Sirleaf for taking office soon as President of Liberia and believed that under her leadership Liberia will surely be able to realize national lasting peace and economic rejuvenation as soon as possible. Hu indicated that the Chinese government cherishes the friendship and friendly cooperative relations between both sides and would like to make joint efforts with Liberia to advance continuous development of bilateral relations.

Sirleaf expressed thanks and welcome for President Hu to appoint Foreign Minister Li as Special Envoy to attend her inaugural ceremony and convey an enthusiastic oral message and asked Li to convey best wishes from her and the Liberian people to President Hu and the Chinese people. She said that since the resumption of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have witnessed vigorous development and both sides have conducted fruitful cooperation. The Liberian people sincerely thank China for dispatching peacekeeping personnel and aid specialists to Liberia to help its resumption of peace and post-war reconstruction. The new Liberian government will resolutely pursue the one-China policy and support China's grand cause of reunification, would like to do its utmost in pushing for development of bilateral friendly cooperative relations and hopes that China will continue supporting and assisting Liberia's national reconstruction.

Li indicated that the Chinese government would like to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the new Liberian government in various areas and at all levels and maintain close consultations and cooperation in international and regional affairs. China will continue to actively participate in Liberia's peace and reconstruction process.
