On January 19, 2006, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with General Secretary of the General People's Committee (Premier) of Libya Shukri Mohamed Ganim in Tripoli and held talks with Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation (Foreign Minister) Abdurahman Mohammed Shalgum. Both sides made positive comments on the sound development of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties 28 years ago and exchanged views on major international and regional issues. Both sides agreed to make joint efforts to promote their friendly cooperation in the areas of politics, economy & trade, culture, investment and infrastructure and strengthen communication within the UN and other international organizations in a bid to push for further development of bilateral relations. Premier Ganim and Foreign Minister Shalgum reaffirmed that the Libyan government abides by the one-China policy, firmly opposes "Taiwan independence" and supports China's grand cause of reunification. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an unalienable part of China. The Libyan government will not conduct any official exchanges with Taiwan and this position will remain unchanged. Li indicated that China attaches great importance and commits to developing its relations with Libya based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
