Premier Zhu Rongji Held Talks With Moroccan Prime Minister Youssoufi

On August 27, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji held talks with Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi. The two sides exchanged opinions on Sino-Moroccan ties and other issues of common interest in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.

Zhu said that China and Morocco enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges and mutual respect, and have sympathized with and supported each other in their struggles for national independence and liberation decades ago. He said that political ties between the two sides have been healthy since the establishment of diplomatic ties 44 years ago while cooperation in economy, trade, culture, education and health has been fruitful. He especially recalled President Jiang Zemin's visit to Morocco in October 1999 and the return visit by Moroccan King Mohammed VI last February, saying that the two leaders have pointed out the way for further development of Sino-Moroccan ties. Zhu said that the Chinese government is grateful for Morocco's consistent support for China on the issues of Taiwan and human rights as well as Shanghai's bid for World Expo 2010. He added that both China and Morocco have common aspirations to expand political exchanges and economic cooperation between them and share the same goal of promoting South-South cooperation and working for the establishment of a new political and economic world order.

During their talks, the two sides discussed the issue of strengthening economic and trade ties. Zhu said that bilateral economic and trade cooperation has made progress in recent years and cooperation in fishery serves as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation. He noted that both China and Morocco have entered into the World Trade Organization, which has opened new prospects for bilateral cooperation. China encourages exchanges and cooperation between the businesses of the two countries so as to help businesses in both countries seek cooperation projects of common interest and with good potential benefits, and to play a major role in bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

On China's relations with Africa as a whole, Zhu said that China and the vast majority of African countries have profound friendship and good cooperation and have always supported each other in international affairs. He said that Sino-African cooperation has entered a new stage since the first ministerial meeting of Forum on Sino-African Cooperation in October 2000. As promised at the meeting, China has remitted 10 billion RMB yuan of African debts, and China will explore new ways, approaches and fields of economic and trade cooperation with Africa on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Youssoufi extended a warm welcome to Zhu for his visit. He said that Morocco and China enjoy a firm relationship with sincere friendship, adding such kind of relationship has been built on the basis of equality, dialogue and mutual respect. He confirmed the One China policy Morocco pursues, and said that as countries with ancient civilization, both countries are brought closer by the common task of development in the current process of modernization drive. He emphasized that Morocco attaches importance to the active part China plays in international affairs, highly appreciates the establishment of Forum on Sino-African Cooperation, believing it can play a constructive role in the all-around development of Sino-African relations.

The two sides also exchanged opinions on the Middle East issue and the anti-terrorism issue.
