On June 20, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing paid a visit to Palestine where he met with President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei respectively and held talks with Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Nasser al-Kidwa. During the meetings and talks, Li said China-Palestine friendship has withstood various tests. The Chinese and Palestinian people have been understanding and supporting each other over the years and are each other's trust-worthy friend. The Chinese people firmly supports the just cause of the Palestinian people to strive for national independence and remain grateful to the Palestinian people for their support for China's reunification. The successful visit of President Abbas to China not long ago has uplifted China-Palestine relations to a new height. China would like to make joint efforts with Palestine to implement the consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries on bilateral relations, boost the personnel exchanges between the two sides in various aspects and promote the progress of related cooperative projects. China decides to provide assistance to Palestine for the construction of the new building for the country's foreign ministry and the reparation of destroyed houses and to provide further training for Palestinian personnel. Abbas and other Palestinian officials indicated that China is a good friend and brother of Palestine. Palestine values its traditional friendship with China and will never forget China's sincere support and assistance to Palestine over the years. He thanked China for its new assistance and expects the friendly cooperation between Palestine and China to be further strengthened. The Palestinian leaders briefed Li on the latest development in the situation between Palestine and Israel as well as the efforts made by Palestine to promote the peace process in the Middle East, stressing that the situation between Palestine and Israel is in a critical period and Palestine insists to solve problems and realize lasting peace and security in the region through peace talks. They hoped the international community could urge Israel to make positive responses to the efforts of Palestine, stop building more settlements and segregation walls on the Palestine's occupied territory and carry out the Disengagement Program in an appropriate manner. Palestine appreciates China's consistent fair stance on this issue and hopes that China would continue to play an active role in promoting the peace process of the Middle East. Li expressed his admiration to the efforts made by the Palestinian leadership led by Abbas to conduct reform internally and promote peace talks externally, stressing that China insists to resolve the problem between Palestine and Israel through political dialogues on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace" and to create a Palestinian state at the earliest date possible. The two sides also exchanged views on the reform of the UN and the Iraqi issue, and signed documents relating to China's provision of assistance to Palestine.
