On April 22, 2009, Palestinian National Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Abbas said China, as a sincere friend of the Palestinians, has been supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights and has provided unselfish aids to the social and economic development of the Palestinian side. The Palestinian side is thankful for China's assistance over the years, he said. Abbas noted the relationship between the two sides is on a good track, and both sides have maintained communication and coordination in many areas. He appreciated the constructive role China has played in the Middle East issue, expressing willingness to work with China to boost the Middle East peace process. Yang said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties more than 20 years ago, both sides have witnessed frequent political exchanges, expanding economic and trade cooperation, fruitful cultural and educational contacts and sound communication in regional affairs. China attaches great importance to the traditional friendship between the two sides, and will continue to support the righteous cause of the Palestinians to restore their legitimate national rights. China is ready to strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between the two sides at all levels in a bid to push forward their friendship cause, he added. Yang said that the current situation on the Middle East issue is getting complicated, but it's important for all sides to keep on the track of peace, commit to the two-state solution, and fully implement the UN resolution 1860. He called upon the international community to keep paying attention to the issue and keep coordinating and cooperating with each other, so as to provide the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and Palestinian economy a strong support. "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a sincere friend of the Palestinians, China, along with the international community, is ready to help the Palestinians to realize the goal of having their own country at an early date, and make unremitting efforts to push the Middle East peace process forward," Yang added. On the same day, Yang also met with Riyad al-Malki, Palestinian Minister of Information and Foreign Affairs.
