On September 14, 2004, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail at Borg Al-Arab Airport of Alexandria, Egypt.

Ismail briefed Li on the latest developments of the Darfur issue and the measures adopted by the Sudanese government in alleviating the situation in Darfur, expressing gratitude to the Chinese government for sending a special envoy to visit Sudan for the issue.

Li appreciated the efforts made by the Sudanese government in carrying out Resolution 1556 of the UN Security Council, noting that the international community should make joint efforts with the Sudanese government so as to achieve an appropriate settlement of the Darfur issue at an early date.
