Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Meets with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia Madani

2007/06/28

On June 28, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in the office building of the Foreign Ministry with visiting Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia Nizar bin Obaid Madani.

Madani briefed on Saudi Arabia's views and efforts on the issue concerning the Sudanese region of Darfur, expressing support of the efforts to properly resolve this issue and opposition to any actions that may harm these efforts. He expressed hope that the international community can work together to maintain the current positive momentum in the Darfur issue and appreciated China's constructive role in addressing the issue, adding that Saudi Arabia is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China.

Yang introduced the unremitting efforts the Chinese government has made to resolve the Darfur issue, saying that dialogue and equal consultations are an effective approach to a political solution to the issue. Under the current situation, the international community should urge all parties concerned to continue, through dialogue, to implement the Annan plan and push forward the "double track" strategy in a balanced manner, so as to achieve all-round peace at an early date, improve humanitarian and security conditions in the Darfur region and realize stability there, Yang said. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Saudi Arabia on the Darfur issue to push for its proper solution, he added.

Both sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties and other issues.
