Hu Jintao Meets with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama

2010/04/13

On April 12, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Washington. Both sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on China-Japan relations and other issues of common interest.

Hu said currently China-Japan relations enjoy a sound momentum for development and the leaders of the two countries have maintained close exchanges and reached a lot of important consensus. Pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in all areas have been advanced earnestly with close communication between both sides in international and regional affairs.

"As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, the relationship between our two countries faces new opportunities for development against the background that the international and regional situation is undergoing profound changes and adjustments," said Hu. Both sides should seize favorable opportunities to push forward China-Japan relations and enhance the level of bilateral strategic reciprocal relations. To this end, Hu raised a four-point proposal. First, keep high-level exchanges. The leaders of the two countries should continue to make use of various occasions to keep contact. Both sides should also continue strengthening dialogue and exchanges between their governments, political parties and parliaments to build up mutual trust. Second, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. Both sides should bring into full play the role of the economic high-level dialogue and other mechanisms to promote steady growth of economic and trade cooperation. Both sides should follow the trend of world economic development, take sustainable development as their goal and enhance cooperation on energy, environment, low-carbon technology, green economy, recycling economy and high-tech, so as to push bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a higher level. Third, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges. It is hoped that both sides will continuously innovate forms of exchanges, establish and perfect relevant mechanisms and improve mutual understanding and friendly feelings between both peoples. Fourth, enhance cooperation in the process of Asia's integration. China is ready to strengthen dialogue, communication and coordination with Japan and join hands with it to advance regional cooperation in the areas of trade, finance and infrastructure construction, to push for substantive progress of Asia's integration process.

Echoing Hu's proposals on developing China-Japan relations in the new situation, Hatoyama expressed the hope to build a strategic relationship of mutual benefit between Japan and China. He also hoped both sides will enhance high-level exchanges and enrich bilateral ties. Japan is willing to develop friendly cooperation with China and other nations in the region in various fields to advance the establishment of an East Asian community, he said. Hatoyama said Japan is willing to work with China to implement the principled consensus reached by both countries and turn the East China Sea into a sea of friendship and cooperation. He said the Japanese side appreciated what China has done over the dumpling poisoning issue and would like to promote food safety cooperation with China. He added that Japan would also like to strengthen cooperation with China in environmental protection technologies and in climate change. Japan hopes to share experience with China in promoting green economy, he said.

Ling Jihua, Wang Huning, Dai Bingguo and other officials attended the meeting.
