On October 14, 2012, Chinese President Hu Jintao exchanged congratulatory messages with his Maldivian counterpart Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In his message, Hu said China and Maldives are traditionally friendly neighbors. Over the past 40 years, friendly relations between China and Maldives have withstood the test of international vicissitudes and moved forward steadily. China-Maldives relations have become the model of equal treatment and peaceful coexistence between a big country and a small one. China stands ready to work with Maldives to promote the traditional friendship, deepen pragmatic cooperation and push the ties to a higher level, Hu said.
For his part, Waheed said the friendship between the two countries has a long history. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, the two countries have always maintained close friendship and cooperation. Maldives remains grateful for China's assistance and cooperation for its development and looks forward to furthered friendly relations between the two countries.
On the same day, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also exchanged congratulatory messages with his Maldivian counterpart Abdul Samad Abdulla to mark the occasion.
