Yang Jiechi Meets with Pakistani President Zardari

2009/08/24

On August 24, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Guangzhou with visiting Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

Yang first conveyed Chinese President Hu Jintao's cordial greetings and good wishes to Zardari. China and Pakistan shared all-weather friendship and all-round cooperation, and China-Pakistan ties had withstood the test of the changeable domestic and international situations and maintained healthy and smooth development, Yang said. China appreciated Pakistan for its firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.

The bilateral strategic and cooperative partnership has currently maintained a sound momentum of development, with close high-level contacts, frequent friendly exchanges at all levels and deepening cooperation on politics, economy, security and humanities, said Yang.

China valued the hard-earned strategic mutual trust and profound friendship with Pakistan and would continue to view and develop the bilateral ties from a strategic height and long-term perspective, Yang said. He said China was ready to work with Pakistan to deepen the strategic cooperative partnership, expand all-round friendly exchanges, push ahead with pragmatic cooperation in all areas and enhance coordination in the international and regional affairs, so as to push bilateral ties to a new level.

Zardari asked Yang to convey his cordial greetings and good wishes to President Hu Jintao and expressed satisfaction with the sound development momentum of bilateral ties. He said currently the international situation was undergoing significant changes and the two countries should further enhance cooperation to tackle various challenges and promote common development.

Zardari reaffirmed that Pakistan adhered to the one-China policy and firmly backed the Chinese government's position on the July 5 riot in Urumqi. Both sides should continue to support each other on issues concerning the other side's core interests and concerns, maintain high-level contacts and enhance pragmatic cooperation in such areas as agriculture, transportation, water conservancy and infrastructure. He said the two countries were partners that could trust each other forever.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
