Bilateral Relations

The year 2010 marked the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of the Philippines. The strategic and cooperative relationship for peace and development between the two countries maintained sound momentum of development. Exchanges and cooperation in various fields were fruitful.

The two countries maintained close high-level exchanges. In June, Special Envoy of President Hu Jintao and NPC Vice Chairman Yan Junqi attended the inauguration ceremony of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. In October, during the East Asian leaders meeting in Hanoi, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with the Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo. In June, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal attended the National Pavilion Day of the Philippines at the Shanghai World Expo. In April, Vice President Noli De Castero attended the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo in China. In December, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay attended the opening ceremony of the Asian Paralympic Games in Guangzhou, China.

Economic cooperation and trade advanced steadily. Exchanges and cooperation in military, educational and cultural fields continued to expand. The cultural activities during the Shanghai World Expo and celebrations of the 35th anniversary of the diplomatic ties boosted the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. In October, Philippine Secretary of Tourism Alberto Lim attended the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.

The two foreign ministries increased communication and coordination. In October, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue and Philippine Under Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs Erlinda F. Basilio co-chaired the 16th diplomatic consultations between the two countries.
