On December 31, 2008, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei and his Vietnamese counterpart Vu Dung in Hanoi reached an agreement on the remaining issues related to the two countries' land boundary survey. The agreement achieved the goal set by leaders of China and Vietnam to complete the survey and the erection of boundary markers within this year.

During the eight-year effort, Chinese and Vietnamese government delegations carried out the land boundary survey work and realized a mutually beneficial win-win result based on the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries and the China-Vietnam border delimitation treaty. The settlement of the China-Vietnam land boundary is a major issue of historic significance in the bilateral relations. It will promote peace, stability and prosperity along the China-Vietnam border and benefit the two peoples in the area. It also will boost the development of the two countries' all-round strategic partnership of cooperation.

Both China and Vietnam also pledged to make joint efforts to build the land border area into a bond of harmonious coexistence, friendly communications and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
