On February 23, 2009, a ceremony was jointly held by China and Vietnam at the Youyiguan border gate in Pingxiang City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, marking the completion of land border demarcation and the erection of boundary markers. On behalf of the two governments, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem addressed the ceremony respectively. More than 400 representatives from foreign affairs, defense, public security, surveying and mapping and economic agencies of both countries and border local governments were present at the ceremony. In his speech delivered at the ceremony, Dai said under the joint care and guidance of the leaders of the two countries, both sides, in accordance with their land border treaty, achieved win-win results through friendly consultations and fulfilled the common aspiration of both peoples. "The completion of land border demarcation is a major event in bilateral relations with great realistic significance and far-reaching historic significance," Dai said. "It not only creates a new favorable condition for the two countries to develop a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, but also contributes to regional peace, stability and development," he said. Dai said China and Vietnam are friendly neighbors linked by mountains and rivers and to develop bilateral friendly cooperative relations is in the fundamental interest of both countries and their peoples. "The Communist Party of China and the Chinese government attach great importance to the relationship with Vietnam. We are willing to make joint efforts with the Vietnamese side to develop land borders into a link of friendly exchanges and close cooperation, thus bringing benefits to the two peoples," Dai added. Pham Gia Khiem said the completion of land border demarcation lays a solid foundation for building the borders into a link of peaceful friendship and long-term stability and satisfies the long-term and ardent aspirations of the two peoples. It also creates new favorable conditions for the development of the two countries, he said. "It embodies the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries and also sends an important signal to the whole world that Vietnam-China friendly cooperative ties are developing very well." he added. Pham and Dai jointly unveiled the No. 1116 and No. 1117 boundary markers.
