Yang Jiechi Applauds the Important Outcome of the London Conference on Afghanistan

2010/01/29

On January 28, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi spoke highly of the London Conference on Afghanistan with security, economic development and governance topping the agenda. Yang applauded the important and positive outcome of the conference, saying that China also made its contributions to its success.

"After a wide range of discussions on Afghanistan’s security, economic development and governance, the participants agreed what the international community can do to help the government and people of Afghanistan to achieve social stability, economic development and well-being," Yang said in a news briefing after the conference.

Yang pointed out that all parties at the conference pledged to make contributions according to their own realities. As the results of the meeting are yet to be realized, all parties have a lot of work to do in the future, he added.

Yang said China will continue providing within its ability the Afghan government and the Afghan people with assistance in various forms, including funds, personnel training and setting up joint ventures in Afghanistan. The more important is that the international community should make contributions to Afghanistan’s domestic reconciliation, security, economic development and social progress, he noted.

Addressing the London conference on Afghanistan, Yang said the international community should give continued attention to Afghanistan and offer greater support and assistance to that country. It is of particular importance to help Afghanistan strengthen its sovereignty, ownership and development capacity, thus laying the groundwork for a full transition to governance of Afghanistan by the Afghan people. Regarding the next stage of Afghan reconstruction, Yang made four proposals, namely ensuring security, developing the economy, improving governance and enhancing cooperation.

The London Conference on Afghanistan was held at the Lancaster House, London on January 28 with Afghanistan’s security, governance and development as well as regional and international aid topping the agenda.
