On 21 November 2013, Vice Premier Liu Yandong of the State Council co-chaired the fourth China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington D.C..
Liu Yandong expressed that President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama have reached important consensus on building a new model of major-country relations between China and the United States and China-US relations are standing at a new starting point. The establishment of the mechanism of the China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) is a big event in the development course of bilateral relations. In recent years, the mechanism of the CPE has enjoyed unceasing development and yielded important outcomes.
Liu Yandong expressed that continuing to promote China-US people-to-people exchange is conducive to enhancing understanding and trust between both sides, to letting the spirit of mutual respect and win-win cooperation deeply rooted in the hearts of the people and to laying a solid foundation of support from the public opinion and social sectors for the new model of major-country relations between China and the United States. Both sides should further leverage the bridging role of mutual learning of civilization, to enhance mutual trust, to unceasingly expand the areas of cooperation, to enrich the contents of cooperation and to open up a new landscape for the cause of China-US people-to-people exchange.
Kerry expressed that developing a strong China-US cooperative partnership conforms to the interest of the two countries and of the world. The US attaches importance to the mechanism of the CPE and will work with China to fully leverage of the role of the mechanism so as to enhance mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples and to jointly cope with global challenges.
Liu Yandong and Kerry signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Mechanism of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE).
