On the evening of October 30, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held phone talks with Javier Solana, secretary-general of the Council of the European Union & high representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy. Both sides exchanged views on Iran's nuclear issue.

Solana briefed Yang on a recent meeting between the EU and Iran. Yang elaborated on the Chinese government's position over the Iran nuclear issue, saying it should be settled peacefully through diplomatic negotiations. China supports the efforts made by the European Union (EU) in seeking an appropriate solution to the issue through diplomatic negotiations, Yang said. Both sides agreed to keep close contact on the issue.
