President Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Pakistani President Musharraf

2008/04/11

On April 11, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with visiting Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in Sanya, a scenic city on south China's island province of Hainan. Both sides agreed to make joint efforts to consolidate the all-weather friendship and deepen the bilateral strategic partnership.

Highly praising China-Pakistan relations as good neighbors, friends, partners and brothers, Hu said the two countries share an all-weather friendship and overall cooperation. The consistent mutual understanding, trust and support between the two countries on the issues concerning each other's core interest are the basis for China-Pakistan relations. China pays great attention to the relationship with Pakistan, always gives it a priority in China's foreign policies, and always handles and promotes the relationship from a strategic and long-term point of view, Hu said. He added such principles will not change no matter what happened in the international situation and domestic situation of the two countries.

President Hu made a five-point proposal for further promoting the China-Pakistan strategic partnership. He suggested the two countries should consolidate the political basis of their strategic partnership, maintain exchanges and cooperation in various levels between governments, legislatures, political parties and armed forces so as to ensure the consistency and stability of their strategic partnership, and strengthen communication and consultation on major issues through strategic dialogue and other mechanisms. Hu urged both sides to expand pragmatic cooperation in the economic and trade area and proposed that progress of the negotiations on service trade should be accelerated, and a comprehensive free trade area should be established as early as possible. He called on both sides to fulfill the long-term target for bilateral trade at the earliest date possible. The Chinese government will continue to encourage Chinese companies to enhance cooperation with their Pakistani counterparts in areas including finance, telecom, energy and transportation. Hu urged the two countries to strengthen cooperation in fighting terrorism and drug control, and enhance exchanges and cooperation over Beijing Olympic Games security. Hu called for enhancing cooperation and exchanges in areas of culture, education, health, sports, tourism, and between media and academic organizations. He encouraged the two countries to expand exchanges between women, young peoples and non-governmental organizations, and strengthen cooperation in human resources development and vocational training. Hu also suggested the two countries enhance multilateral cooperation and continue close coordination and cooperation in the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Regional Forum of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, so as to safeguard common interests of China and Pakistan, as well as those of other developing countries.

Musharraf said the China-Pakistan friendship has been rooted deeply in the peoples of the two countries. The bilateral cooperation has expanded to various fields with fruitful achievements. To develop the strategic partnership with China is the pillar of Pakistan's foreign policies. He said Pakistan hopes the two sides can explore new ways to further strengthen two-way cooperation, especially in such areas as trade, investment, energy, infrastructure construction, youth exchange, education and culture.

During the talks, Musharraf said Pakistan hopes and believes that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will achieve success and Pakistan is willing to provide support and cooperation. Pakistan will do its best to ensure that the Beijing Olympic Games torch relay in Pakistan is a success, said Musharraf. Pakistan firmly opposes any attempt to politicize the Beijing Olympic Games and any actions to disrupt the event, Musharraf said. Musharraf also expressed Pakistan's firm support for China to maintain national unity. He said Pakistan regards Tibet as an inalienable part of Chinese territory and firmly opposes any actions to split China. Pakistan will strengthen cooperation with China in fighting against terrorist and extremist forces.

After listening to President Musharraf's briefing on the situation in Pakistan, Hu said that China admires the achievements made by President Musharraf and the Pakistani government in the domestic and diplomatic fields in the past years. China respects, understands and supports all measures taken by the Pakistani government to maintain domestic peace and stability, and promote economic development, Hu said. China believed, Hu said, that Pakistan would make continuous progress in social and economic development under the leadership of President Musharraf and the Pakistani government.

Following the talks, Hu and Musharraf attended a signing ceremony of three cooperation documents concerning water resources management and development, science and technology and sports.

Prior to the talks, Hu Jintao held a grand welcoming ceremony for Musharraf.

Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee (CPCCC) & Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee Ling Jihua, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee (CPCCC) & Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee Wang Huning, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and other officials attended the above-mentioned activities.
