Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi Holds Talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State

On May 12, 2008, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte in Beijing. Wang said in order to push for continuous and stable development of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative ties, both sides should increase dialogue, build up mutual trust and deepen cooperation between the two countries, and continue to well hold the Sino-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue and strategic dialogue. Wang also hoped the two countries would properly handle major sensitive issues such as the Taiwan question and those involving Tibet and maintain communication and coordination on key international and regional issues. Negroponte said the United States is committed to safeguarding and pushing for sustained, stable development of ties with China and hopes to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China on bilateral as well as major international and regional issues. He reaffirmed that his country adheres to the one-China policy and abides by the three joint communiques between the two sides. Wang made positive comments on the recent contacts and consultations between the U.S. and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), adding that China hoped concerned parties, especially the United States and the DPRK, would comprehensively carry out the second-phase actions of the six-party talks as soon as possible in a balanced way and with a pragmatic and flexible attitude, so as to push the six-party talks for substantive progress. China would continue to play a constructive role along with other participants, said Wang. Negroponte expressed the United States' willingness to realize the denuclearization of Korean Peninsula with unremitting efforts. The two sides agreed to maintain contact and coordination on the six-party talk process and exchanged views on building north-east Asia peace and security mechanism. They also discussed the disaster relief in Myanmar and the situation in Afghanistan.
