Hu Jintao Meets with U.S. Secretary of State Rice

2008/06/30

On the morning of June 30, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu made positive comments on Sino-U.S. relations and the fourth Sino-U.S. strategic economic dialogue held recently. He appreciated the U.S. government's support of the Beijing Olympic Games, opposition to trade protectionism and commitment to developing Sino-U.S. constructive cooperative relations.

Hu said that relations between China and the United States were at a "crucial stage" linking the past to the future. "Furthering the Sino-U.S. relationship conforms to the fundamental interest of the two countries and peoples, and it has a profound impact on the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world," he said. He added that "Whatever changes take place in the United States and the international situation, our guideline of developing constructive, cooperative relations with the United States remains unchanged." He pledged to work with the United States to enhance dialogue and exchange based on mutual respect, equality, reciprocity and common development, promote understanding and trust, expand consensus and cooperation and push forward the sustained, healthy and stable development of Sino-U.S. relations for the benefit of both peoples and people around the world.

Rice said the leaders of the two countries have kept sound exchanges, which plays an important role in promoting bilateral ties. Hailing the current positive momentum of U.S.-China ties, Rice said President George W. Bush was expected to meet Hu on the sidelines of the upcoming G8 outreach summit, exchanging views on bilateral ties and other major international and regional issues. She said Bush would continue to promote relations with China in the final part of his term and would strengthen cooperation with China on the six-party talks and other issues. The U.S. side wished Beijing's preparations for the Olympic Games a success.

Hu reaffirmed China's position on the Taiwan question, and Rice emphasized that the United States adhered to the one-China policy.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
