On July 2, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai. Wen expressed once again gratitude for the sympathy and assistance offered by the United Nations and Ban himself after the May 12 earthquake and also briefed Ban on the latest developments of China's relief and reconstruction efforts. Ban spoke highly of the outstanding leadership of the Chinese government in the quake relief and the strong and hard-working spirit of the Chinese people in face of the massive disaster, adding that China's experience is worth learning by the international community. Ban said he was delighted that the disaster relief efforts have entered into a reconstruction phase, expressing belief that under the leadership of the Chinese government and with the efforts of the Chinese people, the quake-hit region will surely be able to rebuild homeland. Wen spoke highly of UN's important role in maintaining world peace and promoting harmony and development of mankind. He pointed out that currently global difficulties and challenges are emerging one after another and the key to their resolution is development. As the largest developing country, China attaches great importance to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and would like to make active efforts to reach the goals. China would work with the international community to help other developing nations to achieve common progress and prosperity, Wen said. China fed 22 percent of the world's population using less than nine percent of the world's land. This was a contribution to global food security, Wen said. Wen said all nations should increase multilateral cooperation to cope with the global food shortage by means of assistance, finance, trade and technology based on the partnership spirit of equality, mutual benefit and win-win results for global development. China supports the UN to play its leading and coordinating role and is ready to actively participate in relevant actions. Ban praised China's important and constructive contribution to safeguarding world peace and common development. He said all countries in the world should jointly cope with the challenges posed by various inter-woven problems, hoping China would play a bigger role in this regard. Both sides also exchanged views on climate change and other international and regional issues.
