Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Meets with Former Australian Foreign Minister & Co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Gareth Evans

2008/10/14

On October 13, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in the Foreign Ministry with former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans, who is also Co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament. Both sides exchanged views on the situation of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and other issues.

Yang spoke highly of China-Australia relations, noting that China is ready to work with Australia from a strategic and long-term perspective to push bilateral all-round cooperative ties for sound, steady development.

On the issue of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, Yang said China has always upheld the complete prohibition and total destruction of nuclear weapons and supported the international nuclear disarmament process. China firmly opposes the proliferation of nuclear weapons in any form and attaches importance to and actively participates in the international efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. China is ready to work with all other countries to remain committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and push the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT to yield positive outcome. Yang appreciated the Australian side for long-term positive efforts in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and expressed welcome for the establishment of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
