Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks on Japan's New Defence White Paper

2011/08/03

Q: The Japanese Government reportedly promulgated its 2011 Defence White Paper on August 2, including negative China-related content once again. What is China's comment?

A: China expresses strong dissatisfaction with the irresponsible remarks against China's national defence building in Japan's new Defence White Paper. I would like to reiterate that China sticks to the path of peaceful development, persists in fostering friendship and partnership with neighbouring countries and resolving problems in bilateral relations through dialogue and consultation, adheres to its defence policy that is defensive in nature and strives to build Asia and the world as a whole with harmony. Bringing important opportunities to countries around the world including Japan, the development of China has not and will never pose threat to any country.

I would like to emphasize that China's defence and military modernization is solely to safeguard its own sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, not targeting any country. We hope Japan can regard history as a mirror, earnestly reflect on its own defence policy and do more to deepen mutual trust with neighbouring countries and maintain regional peace and stability, not the contrary.
